Keck Hospital of USC Workers on 12-hour Strike

Nearly 1,000 technicians and other workers at Los Angeles-based Keck Hospital of USC are scheduled to go on strike Feb. 10, according to a North Hollywood-Toluca Lake Patch report.

The workers, part of the National Union of Healthcare Workers, are slated to take part in a one-day strike, according to the report. The hospital and workers have butted heads over salaries and benefits.

Hospital officials said they plan to have replacement workers on duty to prevent any disruptions while members of the National Union of Healthcare Workers take part in the job action. According to the hospital, the union represents respiratory therapists, surgery technicians, unit secretaries and environmental services and facilities engineers.

The union contends some workers are being paid “poverty wages and inadequate benefits,” saying some of its members qualify for food stamps and other forms of public assistance. It claims that one of every six union workers at the hospital earns less than $15 an hour, and some earn just $10.15 an hour.
